How to Bathe Your Baby

Simple, tender ways to bathe and care for your baby with love

Bathing your baby can feel overwhelming, especially when your baby is very small or fragile. Many families later share that this special time together became one of their most meaningful memories, even if they felt unsure at first. There is no “right” way to do this — gentle and simple is enough.

Start by gathering your supplies ahead of time:

  • A small basin or shallow tub with lukewarm water
  • Soft wipes or cloths
  • Receiving blankets (often softer than towels)
  • Mild baby soap, if appropriate
  • Clothes, blankets, hats, or diapers you may want afterward

If your baby’s skin is extremely delicate, you may choose to keep the bath very simple. Lay several soft receiving blankets on a flat surface and gently place your baby on top. Instead of rubbing the skin, wet a soft wipe and lightly squeeze warm water over your baby’s body. Use soft dabbing motions rather than wiping.

For babies whose skin can tolerate a little more handling, you may gently place them into a shallow basin of warm water. Slowly swish water over them and use tiny amounts of baby soap if needed to help loosen vernix or residue in the hair and skin. Move slowly and gently, supporting your baby throughout the bath.

Some babies may be too large or too fragile to comfortably fit into a basin, and that is okay. A sponge bath on a receiving blanket can be just as meaningful and beautiful.

After the bath, many families choose to dress their baby in a special outfit, wrap them in a blanket, or spend quiet time holding them.

Most importantly, there is no pressure to do this perfectly. This moment is about love, gentleness, and creating memories with your baby.

For Nurses & Providers: It's ideal that the families bathe their baby themselves. Your job is to supply the materials, explain the process, set expectations (like how fragile their skin might be), and you can record/photograph the process if they would like that.
