About Gemma's Hope
About Gemma
Gemma Hope Shaw is the heart behind everything we do. Her life, though brief, continues to impact countless families through this organization.
Gemma is the first and only child of Kyle and Ally Shaw, born in Charlotte, North Carolina in November 2021 at just 1 lb 3 oz. She was born at 23 weeks with a terminal kidney diagnosis (bilateral multicystic kidney dysplasia). Despite her extreme prematurity, she lived for two days in the care of her NICU team before passing in her parents’ arms.
After losing Gemma, Ally experienced firsthand how isolating and overwhelming this kind of loss can be. What followed was a deep desire to create something meaningful—something that would ensure no family has to walk through this kind of grief alone.
Gemma’s life is the reason this organization exists—and the heart behind everything we do.
Our Story (How We Started)
Gemma’s Hope was founded out of personal loss and a desire to bring comfort to others walking through similar grief. What started as a deeply personal response to grief has grown into a mission to support families and hospitals in meaningful, practical ways. Nine months after Gemma was born the organization was founded and began operating out of her nursery.
“After the loss of Gemma, we experienced firsthand how isolating and overwhelming this loss can feel. We created Gemma’s Hope to ensure that no family feels alone and that they receive something tangible—a reminder that their baby is remembered and their story matters. This wasn’t just something I wanted to do to remember my daughter by: this was a problem I wanted to solve in the healthcare system. I wanted to create the kind of movement & hope-giving resources that I wished I had had when I lost Gemma.” -Ally Shaw, Gemma’s mom
Our Core Programs
Hospital Hope Kits
Thoughtfully assembled bags of meaningful items that help families create lasting memories with their baby while still in the hospital. Many of these items are lovingly created and assembled by volunteers.
Kits may include:
- a stuffed animal
- handmade baby blanket
- hand painted ornament
- memorial candle
- essential grief resources for navigating both the hospital experience and the days that follow
Free Book Program
Families can request a free paperback baby loss memoir at any time. Books are shipped directly to their home, providing continued support, comfort, and validation long after they leave the hospital.
Ongoing Support & Resource Library (This Website)
Support doesn’t end when a family leaves the hospital—and neither do we. Our online resource library provides ongoing, accessible support designed to meet families wherever they are in their grief journey. Content includes:
- What to expect physically and emotionally after loss
- Planning a funeral and burial/cremation options
- Navigating grief as individuals and as a couple
- Supporting siblings and extended family members
- Returning to daily life, work, and routines
- Ways to honor and remember a baby
- Book recommendations and reviews
- Financial assistance and additional support
Resources are updated weekly and organized to be easy to navigate without feeling overwhelming.
On-Demand Nurse Education & Resources (Launching 2026)
We are developing accessible, on-demand training for hospital staff on perinatal bereavement care. Through this program, hospitals can strengthen the support they provide to grieving families while earning credits that can be applied toward receiving free keepsake materials and equipment for their units. In-person training events and conferences are also hosted every other year.

We partner with manufacturers and vendors to design and source high-quality bereavement keepsakes, photography equipment, and hospital resources. By purchasing in bulk, we help reduce costs and increase accessibility for hospitals. When funding allows, these items are donated directly to hospitals, and they are also available for purchase. We are proud to serve as a trusted perinatal bereavement vendor for hospitals across the United States.
Financial Assistance for Paid Medical Bills (launching late 2026)
This program is designed to support families who have already paid medical bills related to pregnancy or infant loss and may have missed opportunities for assistance. Unlike most existing grants, which apply only to unpaid bills, this initiative focuses on reimbursing expenses that have already been paid (within the last six months). Applicants will be required to provide documentation of both payment and financial need. Our goal is to fill a gap that currently exists in the support system and provide relief to families who may have carried a significant financial burden on their own.
How We Operate
Gemma’s Hope is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit sustained by the generosity of donors, the dedication of volunteers, and strong hospital partnerships. We work closely with hospitals to ensure resources reach families at the moment they are needed most, while also being mindful not to overwhelm care teams with excess or unnecessary supplies. Behind the scenes, we manage every step of our programs—from sourcing materials and assembling kits to fulfilling book requests and coordinating deliveries to hospitals nationwide. Each item is intentionally chosen to be practical, comforting, and accessible.
With no paid staff, the majority of our funding is reinvested directly into expanding our programs and partnerships. Our model is designed to be simple, efficient, and scalable—allowing us to reach more families each year while maintaining the care and intentionality at the heart of our mission.
